REAL Mechanical Switches Are Coming to Laptops
I love writing. I love typing. I am a keyboard enthusiast. I love ThinkPads, clicky and tactile switches and everything that feeds my passion of writing.
ThinkPad laptops have the best keyboards of any laptop I have ever tried. Still, they are not mechanical. They are just a very clever scissor-switch sitting on a membrane. Now imagine, you could have real mechanical switches on a laptop.
Soon, you can.
Thanks to Cherry, maker of the (in)famous Cherry MX mechanical keyboard switches. They managed to create a fully mechanical switch, that looks just gorgeous, with a miniscule height of just 3,5 mm.
The Cherry MX ULP Click
At first, these switches will find their way in Alienware gaming laptops. But hopefully, this is just the beginning of their journey. I am hopeful that they will find their way in a wide array of laptops.
The switches promise audible and tactile switching at a 65 cN operating force. Pre travel is 0.8 mm out of a 1.8 mm total travel. It looks like there is no histeresis and the switches appear to be very precise.
I don’t think they will replace the classic ThinkPad keyboards anytime soon, and that’s okay. But they might give valid options to other laptop brands. Imagine a DELL XPS or an Apple MacBook Pro with that kind of switches further down the line. One can only hope.
Also they are clicky, my favorite type of mechanical keyboard switch for typing. I can’t wait to hear them in action. I am really excited for something so purposefully small like this.
If you’re a mechanical keyboard enthusiast like me, let’s make sure Cherry get’s the message, that we want those switches in all our thin-and-light- devices. Imagine, what satisfying laptop keyboard switches will do to boost your motivation to write.
So far, there are no reviews out, but I will keep my eyes peeled on the tech YouTubers to get an early impression. But for what it’s worth, the press material looks really promising in my opinion.
