The Ultimate Lenovo Trackpoint II Keyboard Review

When you are considering this keyboard, you most likely want to have the same awesome typing experience you know and love from the ThinkPads on your desktop. Also, you are most likely an avid Trackpoint user. Many of the reviews I watched and read before I got my Trackpoint II keyboard glanced over some facts that I wanted to know.

How is the build quality?

Do the keys feel just like on the laptops?

How robust is the lettering?

In this review I will answer all of these questions and then some, trying to make it comprehensive and compact all at once. Let’s go…

How the Trackpoint II keyboard looks

Well the aesthetics are spot on and at first glance you can see, this is a no-thrills, productivity tool. Just like ThinkPads in general. If you’re in for that kind of thing, you won’t be disappointed. But, if you look a bit closer, you will immediately notice, that the lettering and the keys themselves seem to be of a lesser quality than those on the common model T Thinkpads.

How the Trackpoint II keyboard feels

Upon further inspection, the materials are stiff and durable and there is minimal deck flex, but all in all it feels like quality. But not quite like the smooth keycaps on the T and X series ThinkPads. The keys feel more like harsh plastic, some of them rattle. But the stabilizers beneath the keys are just awesome. If you press down the space bar on one far edge, it will uniformly just move down, completely level, as one piece. Nice.

Unfortunately the plastics of the case are not coated in that typical rubberized material that we all love to hate for all the smudges. It’s just plain plastic with a rough texture. This is a bit…
