It’s no secret that I enjoy toying with Linux and urge everyone to at least give it a try once. Recently released POP!_OS by System76 makes the step into Linux more userfriendly and enticing than ever. But there are of course plenty of other distros for you to try as well. These 7 apps are my recommendation for absolute beginners on Linux. They can be found on the most popular distros (especially if they are Ubuntu/Debian based).

Brave new worlds

So, once you got your Distro installed and look at the beautiful desktop (a “Cosmos” tweak of the Gnome desktop if you went with POP!_OS) the first thing you should do is go find the app center (or app shop, software store, or something named in a similar fashion, “POP!_Shop” in POP!_OS). Usually the OS will prompt you with some automatic updates to make, which you’ll agree to.

After that you are free to explore the vastness of the generally free and open source software packages (i.e. “apps”) to download and install easily from the app center, just with one click.
